What happens when baby is removed early (usually due to a cavity)?
The baby tooth normally holds a space for the adult tooth (picture 1). If the baby tooth is removed, and nothing is done, the space is lost, and the adult tooth becomes “blocked out” under the gum (picture 2). A space maintainer can be used to prevent the space loss. This is why it is important to see an orthodontist to evaluate the spacing for the teeth, even if there are baby teeth present.
There are many different types of space maintainers: fixed or removable. At MacKenzie Orthodontics, we evaluate each patient to create an individualized treatment plan. If a space maintainer is necessary, Dr. MacKenzie will discuss all available options with you. Usually a space maintainer is worn for a long time, while waiting for the adult tooth to come in.
