All children need an orthodontic consult by age 8. The appointment is easy and comfortable, and not every child needs treatment at this age. During the orthodontic screening appointment, Dr. MacKenzie will examine the teeth and jaws and will take photos and an x-ray. The x-ray will show all the erupting adult teeth as well as the baby teeth.
What are some conditions that need to be treated early:
- Crossbites of the front or the back teeth
- Narrow upper jaw that does not fit well with the lower jaw
- Severe crowding
- Flared upper teeth
- Underbite
- Impacted teeth
Even if your child needs early orthodontic treatment, Dr. MacKenzie will discuss the timing and will recommend a time that is best for your child and your family. If your child does not need early orthodontic treatment, we will see them every year until all their permanent teeth erupt.
