Pain-Free Orthodontics

“Will my braces hurt?” is the most common question I get during consults. Discomfort is one of the most common concerns patients raise before starting orthodontic treatment. At MacKenzie Orthodontics, we take that concern seriously. Through advanced technology, thoughtful treatment planning, and tools like the Dental Pain Eraser, we work to keep braces and clear aligner treatment as comfortable as possible, for children, teens, and adults alike.

Why Orthodontic Treatment Causes Discomfort

As teeth shift into their new positions, it is common to feel some soreness, particularly in the day or two following an adjustment or a new set of aligners. This discomfort typically happens:

  • After braces are first placed or tightened
  • When switching to a new clear aligner in your series
  • When an appliance, such as a palatal expander, is activated

While some soreness is a normal part of tooth movement, it does not need to be a defining feature of your treatment experience.

The Dental Pain Eraser

The Dental Pain Eraser is a drug-free device that helps ease soreness associated with orthodontic tooth movement. It is offered to every patient at MacKenzie Orthodontics as part of our commitment to a more comfortable treatment experience.

The Dental Pain Eraser is a small, handheld device that uses gentle neuromodulation technology to interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain. During use, micro pulses are applied to the affected area of the gums or teeth, most patients feel the application as a touch. Relief comes within 20 to 30 seconds, and can last for several hours up to about 48 hours depending on the individual. Because it is drug-free and needle-free, it is considered safe for patients of all ages, from children to adults. You can take it home and use it as much as you like and even show it off to your friends at school and work.

Clear Aligners are More Comfortable Than Braces

Angel Aligner’s Integrated Elastic Hooks: Because the elastic hooks are built into the aligner itself rather than glued to the teeth, patients typically experience fewer emergency appointments and a more comfortable day-to-day experience.

Digital Treatment Planning: Digital x-rays, intraoral scanning, and 3D printed appliances allow us to plan treatment with precision, which can help reduce unnecessary adjustments and discomfort over the course of treatment.

Clear Aligners: For patients using Angel Aligner or Invisalign, discomfort is generally minimal compared to traditional braces, since each aligner shifts teeth gradually in small increments.
