Eating with Braces: Your Guide to a Delicious (and Safe) Smile Journey

One of the most common questions we hear at MacKenzie Orthodontics is: “What can I actually eat once my braces are on?” Whether you are visiting our clinics in Saint John, Quispamsis, or St. Stephen, transitioning to life with braces doesn’t mean you have to give up flavor. It just means being a little more strategic about your menu. Protecting your brackets and wires is the fastest way to stay on track for that perfect Southern New Brunswick smile!

The “Green Light” List: Foods That Love Your Braces

In the first few days after getting your braces or a new adjustment, your teeth might feel a bit tender. Soft foods are your best friend during this time.

  • Dairy Delights: Yogurt, Greek yogurt, soft cheeses, and cottage cheese are excellent high-protein options.
  • Grains & Breads: Soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins (without nuts!), and cooked pasta or rice.
  • Protein Power: Scrambled eggs, flaky fish (like salmon), deli meats, and soft-cooked chicken or meatballs.
  • Fruits & Veggies: Bananas, applesauce, mashed potatoes, steamed carrots, and beans.
  • Treats: Milkshakes, fruit smoothies, Jell-O, and pudding.
  • Pro Tip: If you’re a fan of local Atlantic produce, enjoy those summer berries—just be sure to rinse well afterward, as tiny seeds love to hide behind orthodontic wires!

The “Red Light” List: Foods to Avoid

To prevent broken brackets or bent wires (which can lead to extra appointments and a longer treatment time), it’s best to steer clear of these categories:

  • Hard & Crunchy: Popcorn (the unpopped kernels are bracket-breakers!), ice cubes, hard pretzels, and nuts.
  • Sticky & Chewy: Caramel, taffy, Gummy Bears, and chewing gum (unless it’s specifically “orthodontic-safe” sugar-free gum).
  • Tough Crusts: Pizza crusts, crusty French bread, and hard bagels.
  • Foods You Bite Into: Corn on the cob, whole apples, and raw carrots.

The “Yellow Light” Hack: Proceed with Caution

You don’t always have to say “no”—sometimes you just have to say “not like that.”

  • Apples & Carrots: Never bite directly into them. Instead, slice them into thin, bite-sized wedges or “matchsticks.”
  • Corn on the Cob: Simply cut the kernels off the cob with a knife.
  • Pizza & Burgers: Cut them into smaller pieces rather than taking a large front-tooth bite.

What About Invisalign or clear aligners?

If you’ve chosen Invisalign or clear aligners at MacKenzie Orthodontics, your “food rules” are a bit different! Since the aligners are removable, you can eat whatever you like. The golden rule here is to remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than plain water, and always brush your teeth before putting them back in to avoid staining and cavities.
