What we treat

How a referral works

  1. You refer. Fill in the referral form on this page, call (506) 633-0555, email info@sjortho.ca, or send our referral sheet with the family. Recent x-rays help but are not needed.
  2. We see the family. A free consultation with Dr. MacKenzie at whichever of our three offices suits them: exam, digital x-rays, photos, a 3D scan and a smile simulation, in about 40 minutes.
  3. You get our letter. Dr. MacKenzie writes to you with what she found and her treatment plan.
  4. We keep you informed. During treatment we send you dental letters for cleanings and extractions, and your patient keeps seeing you for regular dental care.

For the families you refer

The first consultation is free, with no obligation. Payment plans start at $250 a month, with 0% interest and a low or no down payment, and we bill insurance directly. See Payment Plans.

What should I send with a referral?

Send recent x-rays and your notes if you have them. Neither is required, because every consultation includes our own digital x-rays. A line on what prompted the referral tells Dr. MacKenzie what you would like her to look at.

What happens after I refer a patient?

The family meets Dr. MacKenzie for a free consultation. Afterwards we send you a letter with the diagnosis and the treatment plan. The consultation includes a clinical exam, digital x-rays, clinical photos, a 3D intraoral scan and a personalized smile simulation, with no cost and no obligation. Most consultations take about 40 minutes. Read about the first visit.

Will you keep me informed during treatment?

Yes. As well as the letter after the consultation, we send you dental letters during treatment for cleanings and extractions. Regular dental cleanings matter while a patient wears braces or aligners, and our team checks oral hygiene at every appointment. See oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment.

Does my patient need a dental check-up before treatment?

Yes. Before braces or aligners go on, your patient needs a dental check-up and cleaning within the last 12 months.

Do you send a letter when treatment ends?

Yes. When treatment ends, we send you a letter.

Do you line teeth up before crowns, bridges or implants?

Yes. We line teeth up for dentists before crowns, bridges or implants.

When should I refer a patient?

We recommend a first orthodontic assessment around age 7, in line with guidance from the Canadian Association of Orthodontists. Patients of any age are welcome, and we have treated adults into their 80s. Signs that often prompt a referral include crowding, a crossbite, a deep or open bite, excess overjet, an underbite, early or late loss of baby teeth, thumb sucking past age 4 or 5, and mouth breathing or snoring. Most children we see at 7 are simply monitored with a checkup every year. See orthodontic issues we treat and treatment for children aged 6 to 10.

Can you see a child younger than 7?

Yes. If a child has a cleft, a craniofacial condition or another concern that you feel needs an earlier look, we are glad to see them well before age 7. Dr. MacKenzie has been the orthodontist on the Cleft Lip and Palate Team at the Saint John Regional Hospital since 2019, and she regularly evaluates infants and young children.
